Your home’s exterior might deteriorate over time due to exposure to moisture and heat. This must be addressed as it can reduce the property value and do more damage in the future. You must protect your investment by conducting regular checkups and repairs, especially to wood.
An instant way to revive your home is by adding a fresh coat of paint. But before you get started, your painting contractors will most likely examine if the wood is rotten or not. Fortunately, you don’t have to replace everything. Here are the steps to repair rotten sections.
1. Examine the Damage
Check if the wood can still be strengthened with a filler or epoxy. Are the cracks too big, or is the color entirely washed out? Take note that some wood can be chipped away to remove the microorganism that causes the rot. Check for how much damage there is to estimate the amount of prep work to be done.
2. Clean the Area
Once you’ve checked the areas to be restored, carefully clean the surface, and remove the paint. It is best if you let professional exterior painters do the job as some old paint might have lead in it. Do not forget to sand the area to remove any splinters, and polish the wood surface.
3. Apply Epoxy or a Wood Filler
With an awl, prod holes into the wood. Doing so removes moisture and lets the wood hardener seep into the area. Fill the gaps with the solution or epoxy, and smoothen the surface using sandpaper. Let it dry.
4. Start Painting
Once the area is completely dry, clean the surface before coating it with a primer. Doing so adds strength to the wood and makes the paint last longer. Let it dry, and proceed with coloring your home with the shades that you prefer.
